Fraction Calculator
Solve fraction math problems. Add, subtract, multiply, or divide two fractions to get a simplified result. The calculator also converts improper fractions into mixed numbers and provides the decimal equivalent.
Fraction Calculator
What is this tool?
The Fraction Calculator is an educational and practical tool designed to handle fractional mathematics with ease. While basic calculators only deal in decimals, working with fractions requires specialized logic to find common denominators and simplify results. This tool handles the tedious math for you, calculating additions, subtractions, multiplications, and divisions.
This utility is ideal for students, teachers, carpenters, and chefs who frequently work with split parts rather than whole numbers. The calculator reduces the output to its simplest fractional form, converts improper fractions to mixed numbers, and provides the equivalent decimal representation to save you conversion time.
How to Use
- 1
Enter First Fraction
Input the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) of the first fraction.
- 2
Select Operation
Choose whether you want to add (+), subtract (-), multiply (×), or divide (÷) the fractions.
- 3
Enter Second Fraction & Calculate
Input the second fraction's values, then click 'Calculate Fraction'. The page will reload and show the simplified result, mixed number, and decimal equivalent.
The Science & Logic Behind It
A fraction represents a part of a whole. It consists of a numerator (the top number, indicating how many parts you have) and a denominator (the bottom number, indicating how many equal parts the whole is divided into). Here is how operations work:
- Addition & Subtraction: To add or subtract fractions, they must have a Common Denominator. The formula is:
(a/b) ± (c/d) = ((ad) ± (bc)) / (bd). After performing this operation, the resulting fraction is simplified. - Multiplication: Much simpler than addition, you multiply the numerators straight across and the denominators straight across:
(a/b) × (c/d) = (ac) / (bd). - Division: To divide by a fraction, you multiply by its reciprocal (invert the second fraction):
(a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c) = (ad) / (bc).
An Improper Fraction occurs when the numerator is larger than or equal to the denominator (e.g., 5/4). A Mixed Number combines a whole number and a proper fraction (e.g., 1 1/4). To simplify any fraction, our calculator finds the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of both the numerator and denominator and divides both by that number.
Practical Use Cases
- Woodworking & Carpentry: Carpenters working with imperial measurements (like inches) use fraction calculators to add measurements such as 5/8" and 11/16" without having to manually convert to 16ths.
- Cooking & Baking: When scaling recipes up or down, chefs use fraction math to calculate ingredients. For example, doubling a recipe that calls for 3/4 cup of sugar requires calculating 3/4 × 2 = 1 1/2 cups.
- School Homework & Tutoring: Students checking their homework or parents assisting children can verify their hand-written fraction steps against the calculator's simplified outputs.
- Scientific Proportions: Lab researchers or engineers use fractions when working with strict scale ratios or ratios of ingredients in chemical mixtures.
